The story of the Yeelirrie uranium mine approvals process at a State and Federal level is shocking.  The Western Australian EPA rejected the mining application because of an unacceptable risk of causing the extinction of unique species.   Yet the WA Government approved the mine immediately before calling an election - and the Federal Government did the same thing. 

Under recently obtained, Freedom of Information, alarming documents demonstrate a lack of transparency and an urgent need for environmental law reform to protect species from becoming extinct.

The nuclear industry is pushing for the nuclear power ban and the uranium trigger to be lifted from the current review of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

The Yeelirrie uranium mine assessment process is a very clear indication of how environmental laws are failing in fair transparent processes. We urgently need improved environmental laws that prevent political influence and improves the agility in the Federal environmental department to protect species from becoming extinct.
