About Jazz on a Saturday

2500 Programs … and counting

At the end of November this program will celebrate the significant milestone with its 2500th edition – same station, same time with the original presenters Roger and John still on air. Amazing as when the program began they thought they would be lucky to last to the end of the year!

The first Saturday in October marks the 48th anniversary of the Victorian Jazz Club’s “Jazz On A Saturday” first broadcast at 4pm on the first Saturday of October 1976, just three months after the launch of Australia’s first regularly-licensed public broadcaster 3CR from its (then) primitive first studios in suburban Armadale.

Over that time, with the addition of Geoff and John T to the team they have maintained their objective of producing high quality programs featuring the broad spectrum of traditional and mainstream jazz from its origins over 100 years ago right up to the present day. They have seen the program evolve through the ages of limited AM radio reception and original sources of vinyl and analogue tape through the CD era to worldwide digital streaming and the challenges of home production.

From the beginning the program has been a production of the Victorian Jazz Club, which was founded 1968 with the aim of promoting and providing opportunities for the live performance of jazz. And our grateful thanks to the Club and the many generous 3CR listeners for the support that has helped keep us (and 3CR) on air over that time.

They look forward to your company at 4pm in Melbourne on Saturday afternoon on 855 AM, on Digital Radio as 3CR Digital, They also welcome the global audience listening via 3CR's live streaming and Audio on Demand. Stay up to date with our events on the Victorian Jazz Club website.
