International Women's Day on 3CR

Our IWD special broadcast team, on Saturday 8 March presented 24 hours of programming to mark International Women's Day.

With global femicide, attacks on women’s sovereignty, reproductive rights, gender affirming care, widespread criminalisation of sex work, rights of migrants and refugees, and militarised repression of those standing up in solidarity, 3CR says HANDS OFF OUR BODIES!

We brought you current affairs, spoken word, feminist discussion, music, arts and much more all day followed by a live to air concert from 5pm to 9pm, featuring spoken word and music from talented local artists and your favourite 3CR presenters!

12.00am Introduction to IWD: Introducing the day and broadcast, including breakfast special IWD interviews, and 3CR's coverage of working women in the movement.

1.00am Writing Home: A show about migrant writers takes us through important feminist readings from the global south. Feminism isn’t a created concept by the west for the west, feminism has always existed in our communities. Presented by Madhvi (Satellite Skies). LISTEN

2.00am The Whole SHEbang 
All things SHE. Featuring songs / bands with female songwriters or front person. Playing music that illustrates how integral women have been in the development of popular and alternative music, changing landscapes and paving the way for others with special guest interviews. Presented by Tanya-Lee Davies.

4.00am  Accent of WomenThis episode is dedicated to raising awareness around 'mental health' within South-Asian diaspora and communities. This episode features Ms Tania Biswas and has been presented by Dr Chris Mallika Bhadra on the lands of the Kulin Nation.

4.30am Women on the LineA national feminist current affairs program for community radio. A gender analysis of contemporary issues, as well as in-depth analysis by a range of women and gender diverse people around Australia and internationally.

5.00am Celebrating Women in Conservation:  Marion and Hannah present a tribute to women in land and water conservation. Kicking off with interviews with Maya Burrell (Kinglake Friends of the Forest), Alana Mountain (Friends of the Earth), and finishing off with some of the discussions from the annual Celebrating Women in Conservation Breakfast event, hosted by Trust for Nature & Bush Heritage Australia.

6.00am Stand Up, Fight Back! Women on Strike Webinar: We hear some of the union women at this online Vic Trades Hall Women event, 18th February 2025, with their industrial actions over the past year. This segment also features the Victorian Trade Union Choir, with Bread and Roses and Four Strong Women.

7.00am Stick Together: Three speeches from the steps of Parliament House on Tuesday 4 March, a rally organised by A Voice For Members, CPSU Vic rank-and-file, against the job cuts and in defence of their own jobs - following the recent Victorian Govt announcement to slash 3000 jobs across the Victorian public service.

10.00am The Radioactive Show: Fighting against nukes: from Mparntwe to the UN 
We hear from Ray Acheson, who worked with ICAN, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, and many other NGOs, community groups, governments, diplomats and civil society, to reach the Treaty on the Prohibition on Nuclear Weapons, which was signed at the UN in 2017. Ray has written a book on the process called 'Banning the bomb, Smashing the Patriarchy'. We also hear Mitch, Eastern Arrendte and Lurritja woman from Mpartnwe or Alice Springs, speaking about fighting a nuclear waste dump on her country and compounding injustices of the NT Intervention and other racist policies.

10.30am Unitarian Half Hour:  Margaret Williamson celebrates Martha Turner, a Melbourne Unitarian who was the first woman appointed as a minister of religion in either Australia or England and who was a founding member of the Victorian Women's Suffrage Society and the Australian Health Society.

11.00am Women of Colour: This special broadcast by Queering The Air will explore intersectionality and culture, examining how these elements affect the experiences of women from diverse backgrounds. We will also delve into their views on the importance of International Women’s Day and their personal ways of celebrating this significant event. Joining us as guests will be the Gender Expansive and Women of Colour Caucus group, made up of women from various cultural backgrounds and experiences, offering valuable insights into the intricacies of intersectionality. Through this conversation, we aim to honour diversity and foster a deeper understanding of the distinct challenges and contributions of women from different cultures.

1.00pm Queer Histories Queer Futures:  Queer Histories, Queer Futures is an audio journey into the stories of our LGBTQIA+ communities in Merri-bek, past, present and future.  Annette Xiberas and Julia Adams-Xiberas: Wurundjeri Elder Annette Xiberras reflects on coming out as a gay Aboriginal woman in the 1960s and 70s, and in conversation with her daughter Julia Adams-Xiberras about their experiences as a rainbow family.  Reimagining queer death care: more inclusive funeral practices and deathcare by putting it back into the hands of communities and their loved ones.

2.00pm Women in Jazz:  Join Anita Harris (Swing and Sway) for a 2-hour special feature of women in Jazz music.

9.30pm I-nity Riddims: Women in reggae presented by Maria Stratford. "Reggae Sistrin: Out Loud and Strong" I-Nity Riddims celebrates this year's International Women's Day with a show dedicated to the many Reggae Sistrin who have contributed to a dynamic history of Reggae Music. Listen and hear some of your favourite classic songs and artists, as well as some more recent contributors.
